Vicki Noble, MD, appointed Chair of Department of Emergency Medicine at UH Cleveland Medical Center, and Emergency Medicine Physician-in-Chief for system

CLEVELAND — Vicki Noble, MD, has been named Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, and Emergency Medicine Physician-in-Chief for the UH health system.

In this role, she has overall responsibility for the leadership of the Emergency Medicine service line.  Dr. Noble began her UH career in 2016 as the Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine as well as the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director.

Dr. Noble came to UH after 13 years with the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.  There she started the point-of-care ultrasound program for Mass General and the fellowship training program in that field.  She established similar programs at UH.  (Point-of-care ultrasound brings portable, handheld ultrasound equipment to the patient for quick imaging to aid in diagnosis and treatment.)

Dr. Noble did her undergraduate work at Princeton University and earned her MD from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by training in emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine residency program.  She then did a one-year fellowship in point-of-care ultrasound at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. She returned to Boston and rejoined Mass General before coming to UH.

She has trained more than 50 fellows in point-of-care ultrasound and wrote the Manual of Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound used as core curriculum for training programs all over the world.  She has published more than 100 articles and numerous chapters on point-of-care ultrasound and has a special interest in lung ultrasound.  She has lectured on the topic worldwide and has been on the boards of numerous ultrasound organizations.  She was the Ultrasound Section Chief for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the President of the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education (SUSME).  She also served on the writing committee for the Critical Care Echocardiography board exam for the National Board of Medical Examiners.

“Dr. Noble is an international leader in ultrasound clinical innovation,” said Christopher Miller, MD, President of Physician Services and the Clinical Network at UH, who preceded Dr. Noble as Chair of Emergency Medicine at UH.  “She is a respected clinician, educator, researcher and advocate who has transformed our specialty.” 

She worked with Dr. Miller to establish UH Clinical Associates, integrating the staff for emergency departments throughout the UH system and has grown the faculty to now include nine training fellowships and clinical experts in toxicology, quality and clinical knowledge translation, sports medicine, pre-hospital and disaster medicine, global health, research, critical care, academic leadership, and ultrasound.

Dr. Noble is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and has taught ultrasound anatomy and physiology to the medical students.
