UVA Darden Launches Online Course Coding for Managers, Designers and Entrepreneurs on Coursera

By Jay Hodgkins

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business is launching an online specialization, Coding for Designers, Managers and Entrepreneurs. Registration for the Coursera-hosted, three-course specialization is currently open.

The new specialization is led by Professor Alex Cowan, an entrepreneur and Darden faculty member who teaches classes in software design and development and also offers the popular Agile Development Specialization on Coursera.

The specialization will enable learners to go from idea to code. It is tailored for managers, designers and entrepreneurs who are active, hands-on collaborators with developers. By the end of the three courses, learners will be able to build working software using HTML, CSS and Javascript, plus demonstrate creative confidence engaging in digital projects.

“Coding has become a critical currency for managers and entrepreneurs looking to innovate and succeed in the digital economy,” said Cowan. “Despite the common belief that coding is a specialized skill belonging only to full-time developers, it is actually a foundational skill for the future. Learners at any level and any stage of their career can learn the basics and become more effective collaborators.”

Over the three courses in the specialization, learners will progress through cases, readings and projects to:

  • Take application designs and translate them into functioning web applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • Evaluate alternative approaches to coding implementations.
  • Work through coding issues with analytical debugging techniques.
  • Relate personal experiences to the challenges and decisions faced by individual developers and development teams.

In Coding for Designers, Managers, & Entrepreneurs I, the focus is to provide a strong foundation to move from idea to design to code. Technologies taught include HTML and CSS.

Coding for Designers, Managers, & Entrepreneurs II extends the learning from the first course with the addition of Javascript, including use of the JavaScript library jQuery.

Coding for Designers, Managers, & Entrepreneurs III concludes the specialization by continuing with JavaScript with a focus on writing algorithms that automate tasks and interfacing with external web APIs.
