WHAT: U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams, M.D., M.P.H. will speak to attendees of ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2019, the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, about major public health issues affecting the U.S. and how physician anesthesiologists can help solve them and improve patient health through better advocacy and community engagement. Reporters are welcome to attend the session.
During his tenure as the 20th Surgeon General and first physician anesthesiologist in that role, Dr. Adams has launched several initiatives to tackle the nation’s most pressing health issues including the opioid epidemic, substance misuse and addiction, and the links between community health, economic prosperity and national security.
Dr. Adams will discuss these initiatives and how physician anesthesiologists are taking action to address them including the critical role they play in combatting the opioid epidemic by helping to limit opioid misuse and abuse. He will also discuss other major public health issues, such as health risks of e-cigarette use among youth and the health risks of marijuana use in adolescence and during pregnancy.
