Trust Science Pledge Highlights 2021 International Day of Light Celebration

WASHINGTON, May 13, 2021 — The annual International Day of Light celebrates light and the role it plays in science, culture, art, education, and many other diverse fields. This year, the day, Sunday, May 16, takes on a special role as organizers invite everyone to #TrustScience.

The steering committee of the International Day of Light, of which the American Institute of Physics is a member, decided to emphasize the importance of evidence-based solutions in science by asking supporters to sign the Trust Science Pledge. Scientists and the public are asked to show their trust in the scientific process with their online pledge.

In addition to the #TrustScience promotion, the International Day of Light is focusing on hybrid and online events in many countries due to pandemic restrictions. In the United States, gatherings to showcase light’s role in our everyday lives will be held from coast to coast. Tours, shows, and interactive events will celebrate light and its many uses

AIP and two of its member societies, the American Physical Society and The Optical Society, are offering resources highlighting light’s historical moments, featuring how it is used in different scientific fields, and providing demonstrations that are ready for classrooms.

The celebration of light and how it impacts so many people in different ways, helping to achieve education, equality, and peace, are the goals of UNESCO, the leader of the initiative. Find more events, resources, and celebrations on social media by following the #LightDay2021 and #TrustScience hashtags, and @IDLofficial on Twitter.
