Trump to release Middle East peace plan, expert available to discuss political implications

President Trump is expected to present details of his long-awaited peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians today following his White House meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and leader of the opposition, Benny Gantz, earlier this week.

Virginia Tech’s foreign policy expert Joel Peters is skeptical that the plan will jumpstart the long-stalled effort to bring Israelis and Palestinians together. “Early reports indicate that it will heavily favor Israeli positions and the Palestinians, who were not invited to Washington this week and have already rejected the plan.”

“The Middle East peace plan could impact Israel’s upcoming March election, which will decide the fate of the embattled Netanyahu. The timing of its release is also a distraction from the Senate’s ongoing impeachment trial of President Trump,” says Peters.
