Trio of Books Penned by UVA Darden Professors Honored as Best Business Books of the Year

Three recent books by University of Virginia Darden School of Business professors have been honored for excellence with Axiom Business Book Awards.

The awards, intended to acknowledge the best business books of the year, have been presented annually since 2007.

Winning books by Darden professors include:

Strategic Execution: Driving Breakthrough Performance in Business (Stanford University Press), by Professor Scott Snell and Kenneth Carrig, received the gold award in the category of Business Intelligence/Innovation.

Strategic Execution addresses why execution matters, the challenges of execution and why an effective, widespread approach remains elusive.

Snell and Carrig explain the four priorities underlying excellence in execution, which they distill as the 4A strategy, focusing on alignment, ability, architecture and agility.

Race, Work and Leadership: New Perspectives on the Black Experience (Harvard Business Review Press), by Professor Laura Morgan Roberts, Harvard Business School Professor Anthony Mayo and Morehouse College President David Thomas, received the gold award in the category of Women/Minorities in Business.

The volume, which was edited by Roberts and her collaborators, takes a multifaceted look at race in the workplace across 23 essays exploring the experiences of black professionals in a broad spectrum of industries on topics including workplace engagement, developing diverse talent and designing programs for true inclusion.

In addition to articles co-authored by Roberts, the book includes contributions from Darden Professor and Global Chief Diversity Officer Martin Davidson and Postdoctoral Fellow Courtney McCluney.

Can Business Save the Earth: Innovating Our Way to Sustainability (Stanford University Press), by Professor Mike Lenox and Aaron Chatteriji, received the bronze award in the Philanthropy/Nonprofit/Sustainability category.

The book dissects the shortcomings of many predominant sustainability efforts and details a path on which business innovation could lead to a truly sustainable future. The authors suggest existing efforts will not be enough to ensure a sustainable future and that an interconnected group of stakeholders must usher in a bold innovation ecosystem capable of producing dramatic and disruptive clean tech innovation.
