New treatment developed to dramatically slow down the progression of blindness-causing retinal diseases

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced that Dr. Maesoon Im of the Brain Science Institute, together with Prof. Seung Ja Oh of Kyung Hee University and Prof. Kangwon Lee of Seoul National University, successfully incorporated anti-inflammatory drugs into a hydrogel to suppress inflammation in the retina and effectively deliver the drugs to the inflamed area.

UC Davis Eye Center tests experimental gene therapy for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Ophthalmologists at UC Davis Health used an experimental gene therapy last month to treat a patient with wet age-related macular degeneration, or wet AMD. Wet AMD is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults. Glenn Yiu, a professor of ophthalmology at UC Davis Health, is the principal investigator for the new clinical trial.

Winners of ARVO Foundation Collaborative Research Fellowship Announced

The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) announced today the recipients of the 2023 ARVO Foundation Collaborative Research Fellowship: José Arthur Milhomens Filho, MD; Maria Constanza Paz, PhD; Raba Thapa, PhD.With the goal of strengthening ophthalmic research capacities worldwide, the Fellowship pairs early-career researchers from developing countries with collaborating scientists in well-established research laboratories.
