Dedicated women’s heart centers can improve accurate diagnoses and outcomes
Cardiac conditions in women are underdiagnosed, undertreated, and under-researched compared to men. In an important prospective study in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, published by Elsevier, investigators report that attending a multidisciplinary dedicated women’s heart center can increase the likelihood of an accurate diagnosis and significantly improve clinical and psychological outcomes of women reporting chest pain due to insufficient heart-muscle blood flow (myocardial ischemia) but not diagnosed with obstructive coronary artery disease.
Revealing the individual immune cells inside the plaque that causes life-threatening heart attacks
Through single-cell RNA sequencing, a research group has successfully illuminated the characteristics of Myeloid immune cells in coronary plaque, which causes acute coronary syndrome (this term includes conditions such as unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)). Based on this data, they hope to develop a treatment method that can stabilize coronary plaque.
Recent cannabis use linked to heart attack risk in younger adults
Adults younger than 45 years who reported recently using cannabis were 2 times more likely to have had a heart attack (myocardial infarction), and this link was stronger in frequent users, according to new research in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).
