Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center fellowship-trained scoliosis surgeon Jason E. Lowenstein, MD, leads the only surgical team in New Jersey to use a new, FDA-approved tethering system for minimally invasive scoliosis surgery that provides for flexible spinal deformity correction and faster healing. The team is also the first in the nation to use a new type of portable CT scanner
to guide the procedure and actually “see” inside the spinal canal during the surgery using
Stryker’s SpineMap 3D in conjunction with the tether.
Two Atlantic Health System Medical Centers Pioneer Surgical Visualization Technologies for Orthopedic Surgeries
Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center recently began pioneering the field of “mixed reality” technology to enhance outcomes in shoulder, hand and upper extremity surgeries. Mixed reality technology provides a virtual hologram that is projected adjacent to the patient during surgery, enabling the surgeon to synthesize online preoperative planning software with real time data analysis during shoulder replacement surgery. This groundbreaking technology enhances the highest level of precision and may in some cases shorten the length of surgery.

What Patients Know About Their Implanted Coronary Stents: Not Enough, According to Morristown Medical Center Study
Fewer than half (48%) of patients receiving a heart stent, or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), had the provided stent card with them when surveyed at a later date, according to researchers at Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center. Even when they had their stent cards, most patients were unable to identify the type of stent they had, which blood vessel it was in, or the date of the previous procedure. Eighty-eight percent of patients did have their smartphone, however. The study will be presented as a moderated poster the morning of May 15, during the American College of Cardiology 70th Annual Scientific Session (ACC.21).

Dr. Géneréux is the only New Jersey-based physician-scientist to be named to this year’s list in the Clinical Medicine category. Clinical Medicine requires more highly cited papers than any other field to meet the criteria for inclusion on the Highly Cited list.
Ovarian Cancer Screening Study Focuses on Early Detection in Women at Low Risk
Atlantic Health System is enrolling women in a landmark study that uses a simple blood test for the CA-125 protein to screen women who are at low risk for ovarian cancer. The purpose of the clinical trial is to help determine whether this test can catch ovarian cancer early in women who would not normally be screened for it. Atlantic Health System hospitals are the only centers in the New York metro region to participate in the study, and have the third highest enrollment numbers in the nation.

Study Reveals New Targets for Next-Generation COVID-19 Vaccines and Tests, Beyond Antibodies
This clinical trial increased an understanding of how T cells mount a response to COVID-19 infection. These findings pave the way for diagnostic tests that detect COVID immunity based on T cells instead of antibodies. Research demonstrates that generating neutralizing antibodies rather than T cells, may not be sufficient for long-term immunity. New discoveries suggest that vaccines will need to incorporate T cell targets to generate lasting COVID-19 immunity.
