More than one-third of all people admitted to the hospital, and as many as 80% of all patients in an intensive care unit (ICU), develop delirium, a type of brain dysfunction marked by sudden bouts of confusion, inattention, paranoia, or even agitation and hallucinations. AI Model Proactively Predicts if a COVID-19 Test Might be Positive or Not

Researchers trained five classification algorithms to create an accurate model to predict COVID-19 test results. Results identify the key symptom features associated with COVID-19 infection and provide a way for rapid screening and cost effective infection detection. Findings reveal that number of days experiencing symptoms such as fever and difficulty breathing play a large role in COVID-19 test results. Findings also show that molecular tests have much narrower post-symptom onset days compared to post-symptom onset days of serology tests. As a result, the molecular test has the lowest positive rate because it measures current infection.

Department of Energy Awards 18 Million Node-Hours of Computing Time to Support Cutting-Edge Research

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that 18 million node-hours have been awarded to 45 scientific projects under the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) Leadership Computing Challenge (ALCC) program. Yevgeniy Vorobeychik doesn’t know exactly what sentience is. Since he’s an engineer, not a philosopher, Vorobeychik can’t say what it’s like to be a bat  or a tree or a rock. He can’t quantify the importance of embodiment to consciousness. He’s not even sure that there’s an inherent problem with people reacting to an artificial intelligence in ways similar to how they react to other people.
