Susan Solomon earns the ISSCR Public Service Award

Skokie, IL–Susan L. Solomon, JD, chief executive officer and founder of The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute is the recipient of the 2020 International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Public Service Award. The honor recognizes outstanding contributions in support of the field of stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Solomon will receive the award during 2020 ISSCR Annual Meeting in Boston, U.S., 24-27 June.

“Susan Solomon has been an early and enthusiastic supporter of stem cell science,” said Doug Melton, Ph.D., former ISSCR president and Xander University Professor at Harvard University, Boston, Mass. “She successfully campaigned for the state of New York to support the field and, more significantly, established a leading foundation dedicated to advancing stem cell science. Her commitment to supporting the entire field, particularly through the awards to young investigators has been inspirational and productive.”

Founded in 2005, NYSCF is one of the largest nonprofit organizations dedicated to stem cell research projects. It is well known for breakthroughs in stem cell research including how to generate the cells and put them to work against ailments like diabetes, mitochondrial disease, women’s reproductive cancers, and Parkinson’s disease. Under Solomon’s leadership, NYSCF has raised and invested more than $350 million for stem cell research at the NYSCF Research Institute, through its extramural funding programs, and for educating the next generation of scientists.

Solomon is described by colleagues as a strong leader, particularly when advocating for diversity and inclusion of young scientists and women in the field, and a champion for scientific excellence.

“Susan’s philanthropic efforts have led to grants that empower early and mid-career stem cell scientists that are unique in their flexibility to support the vision of the investigator and effectively support high-risk/high-reward areas of research for the stem cell field,” said Valentina Greco, Ph.D., ISSCR board of directors member and Carolyn Slayman Professor of Genetics, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn. “The NYSCF investment has created a highly synergizing force with our society in supporting our newest emerging generation of leaders.”

“Susan is simply the most determined person I know,” said Kevin Eggan, Ph.D., ISSCR 2020 annual meeting program committee chair and Professor in the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. “I believe that the world is most changed by people who can look into the future and see the world they want to live in and then dedicate themselves to creating it. Susan is such a person.”
