Steven C. Stain, MD, named Chair of the Department of Surgery at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.

Burlington, MA – Steven C. Stain, MD, has been named Chair of the Department of Surgery at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. Stain is a nationally recognized hepatobiliary surgeon, treating issues related to the liver, bile duct and pancreas.

“Steven brings a depth of experience as a surgical chair and a sustained commitment to the academic enterprise, along with an esteemed national reputation,” said David L. Longworth, MD, President of Lahey Hospital. “We look forward to seeing how his wisdom and expertise will progress our Department of Surgery in leading-edge ways.”

Prior to joining LHMC, Stain served as Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Albany Medical College. Prior to that, he served as Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Meharry Medical College and Professor of Surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, both in Nashville, Tennessee.

With research interests focusing on hepatobiliary surgery, cancer, and disparities in healthcare, Stain has authored or co-authored 131 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 10 book chapters, along with one book. He has served on the editorial board of five scientific journals and has been an ad hoc reviewer for multiple journals.

Stain has been active in multiple national organizations including Chair of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and is currently on the ACS Board of Regents. He has been on the governing boards of the Western Surgical Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Southern Medical Association, American Surgical Association and has been President of the Western Surgical Association, the Society of Surgical Chairs, Society of Black Academic Surgeons, and has chaired surgical sections of the National Medical Association and the Southern Medical Association. He is a senior director of the American Board of Surgery also served as Chair from 2009-10. Previously, he served as the Chair of the Residency Review Committee for Surgery, the Recorder of the American Surgical Association, and he is currently the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.

Stain received his undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of California–Irvine, and he went on to complete residency training in general surgery and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Los Angeles County–University of Southern California Medical Center. He completed fellowship training in hepatobiliary surgery at the Clinic for Visceral and Transplantation Surgery at the University of Bern in Switzerland.
