Stem cell research and pay-to-participate trials webinar announced

In response to the growing concerns of clinical trial research and financial conflicts of interest,

STEM CELLS Translational Medicine

is announcing a special webinar,

Stem Cell Research and Pay-to-Participate Trials

, to help build a consensus statement and establish balance between clinical research and ethical issues. This webinar will be held virtually on September 22, 2021.

Typically, patients do not have to pay to participate in clinical trials; however, as research funding continues to shrink, the growth of pay-to-participate trials has increased. DHHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), the agency that provides expert advice and recommendations to Health and Human Services on issues pertaining to the protection of human subjects in research, also offers recommendations to IRBs, sponsors, investigators, institutions, and prospective subjects with points to consider in the assessment of pay-to-participate research.? When looking at participant-paid trials, the SACHRP “acknowledges that there may be legitimate reasons to charge research subjects, and that prohibiting pay-to-participate trials could in some instances preclude valuable research”.

This webinar will host a panel of experts to discuss the benefits of this research funding model as well the potential misuse, especially when there is a lack of transparency. Please mark your calendar for September 22.
