Rutgers Scholar Available to Discuss Children’s Screen Time During COVID-19

Rutgers scholar Dafna Lemish, author of Children and Media: A Global Perspective, is available to discuss how families should handle children’s screen time during school closures related to COVID19.

“With schools closing and moving to remote learning amidst COVID-19, children will be spending most of their time at home under stressful circumstances and engaging more with TVs, computers, tablets and mobile phones” Lemish said. “Screens can enrich children’s lives, provide them with useful information and stress relief, and offer parents deserved downtime especially as many people are working from home alongside their children. But we must remember that screens can overstimulate young brains, and encourage passivity. Overwhelming children with information on television and online about the COVID-19 can also be very scary.

“In this unprecedented and challenging time, using screens mindfully, in an age appropriate way and according to your family’s values and needs, becomes such an important consideration, particularly under these unique circumstances. It is important to balance screen time with other activities that will keep both children and parents active and happy.”

Lemish is a distinguished professor and the associate dean for programs at Rutgers’ School of Communication and Information. She is internationally known for her scholarship on children and media.
