Rutgers Experts Available to Discuss African American History, Black History Month
New Brunswick, N.J. (Jan. 31, 2020) – Rutgers scholars are available to discuss the many facets of African American history in advance of Black History Month.
Erica Armstrong Dunbar, a Charles and Mary Beard professor of history at Rutgers–New Brunswick, is an expert on African American women’s history with a specialization in urban slavery, emancipation studies, and the intersection of race and gender in American history. She is the author of She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman and Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge
Kali Nicole Gross, a Martin Luther King, Jr. professor of history at Rutgers–New Brunswick, is an expert on black women’s experiences in U.S. with a specialization in the criminal justice system. She is also available to discuss Meghan Markle’s navigation of resistance to her presence as a black member of the British royal family. She is the co-author of the upcoming book, A Black Women’s History of the United States.
Donna Murch, an associate professor of history at Rutgers–New Brunswick, is an expert in mass incarceration and the war on drugs, as well as the history of the Black movement and other civil rights and social movements in California. Her research and essays were featured in Stanley Nelson, Jr.’s Black Panther Party documentary, “Vanguard of the Revolution.”
Derrick Darby, a Henry Rutgers professor of philosophy, is an expert in social and political philosophy, inequality, democracy, and relationships between hip hop, politics and philosophy. He is the founding director of the Rutgers Social Justice Solutions Research Collaboratory and coauthor of Hip Hop and Philosophy: Rhyme 2 Reason and The Color of Mind: Why the Origins of the Achievement Gap Matter for Justice .
