UrduNew Brunswick, N.J. (October 30, 2019) — Professor Leslie M. Kantor, a reproductive health expert at the Rutgers School of Public Health, is available to comment on the ongoing hearing to determine the fate of Missouri’s only abortion clinic and the temporal block of the Alabama abortion ban.
“The data show that an increasing number of women who seek abortion live below the poverty line. Limiting their access to convenient, quality, affordable healthcare both impacts women’s health and puts a strain on the resources of more progressive states that provide services to these women,” Kantor said.
“The rulings in Alabama, similar to recent injunctions granted in others states, would ensure safe abortion services remain legal and accessible to women”, Kantor added. “While this is a win for reproductive rights now, more threats should be anticipated — risking access to abortions in the future.”
If the Planned Parenthood health center closes, Missouri would be the first state in the nation without access to abortion services since 1974, the year after the U.S. Supreme Court extended federal protections for the procedure in its Roe v. Wade decision.
Dr. Kantor serves as chair of the Rutgers School of Public Health’s Department of Urban-Global Public Health.
