Rutgers Expert Available to Discuss Earthquakes in Puerto Rico,  Need for Preventative Policy Changes in Urban Planning

New Brunswick, N.J. (Jan. 13, 2020) – Rutgers scholar Zaire Dinzey-Flores, an expert on Puerto Rican and Latino issues, is available to discuss the need for policy changes following last week’s devastating earthquakes in Puerto Rico.

“Current policies in urban planning have made communities in Latin America vulnerable after natural disasters.  The recent earthquakes in Puerto Rico are the latest in a series of devastating events that calls for the urgent need for policies in place to protect the citizens of Puerto Rico before these events occur, rather than having the community rely on self-sufficiency to get by after it’s too late,” Flores said.

Flores, an associate professor in Rutgers University–New Brunswick’s Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies and the Department of Sociology, is an expert on Puerto Rican history, urban history, construction, infrastructure, and current social conditions. She is the author of Locked In, Locked Out: Gated Communities in a Puerto Rican City.
