New Brunswick, N.J. (Mar.  17, 2020) – Rutgers religion expert Louis Benjamin Rolksy is available to discuss the response in Christianity to COVID-19 and the way science and religion have come together in some communities.

“Churches are responding to coronavirus in a multiplicity of ways,” he said. “Within Christianity, there has been no one ‘Christian’ response to our chaotic circumstances. For some churches, governmental advice about social distancing is yet another intrusive act of federal oversight that threatens the First Amendment and its promise of separating church from the state. Other Christian communities have decided to institute social distancing in their congregations and their campuses. This directive is not only a scientific one; it’s also a theological principle that is in line with serving the least of these. In many ways, science and religion have come together in a surprisingly collaborative manner in the name of the public good.”

Rolsky, a lecturer in the Department of Religion, is an expert in the relationships between religion, progressive politics and mass media. He is the author of The Rise and Fall of the Religious Left: Politics, Television, and Popular Culture in the 1970s and Beyond.
