Rutgers Expert Available to Discuss Australian Climate and Wildfires

New Brunswick, N.J. (Jan. 7, 2020) – Rutgers University–New Brunswick climatologist David A. Robinson is available for interviews on weather and climate conditions that have contributed to catastrophic wildfires in Australia.

“The remarkable wildfire outbreak in Australia is a result of persistent drought in eastern regions along with record-breaking heat,” said Robinson, the New Jersey State Climatologist and a distinguished professor in the Department of Geography in the School of Arts and Sciences. “This appears to be associated with a broad atmospheric pattern that extends from Australia westward across the Indian Ocean region along with the impacts of a warming climate linked to human activities. It rarely is just short-term or long-term drivers that lead to such disastrous conditions. It is rather likely that the fire danger will remain exceptionally high through the remainder of the Australian summer.”
