UrduKristyn Brandi, a reproductive health expert, is available to discuss alleged medical abuses and unwanted hysterectomies at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility.
“It’s horrifying to hear about these allegations and forced sterilizations occurring to detainees in ICE custody,” said Brandi. “This is a modern-day example of how the history of eugenics, white supremacy and reproductive control still exists in black and brown communities today.
“As an OB/GYN for more than a decade and a Latinx woman whose community has been plagued by institutionalized reproductive health control, this goes against the medical profession’s core. It is important to provide informed consent for any procedure, including sterilization or hysterectomy. Medical providers must make sure to discuss sterilizations with patients and must meet the needs and wishes in that shared decision making.”
Brandi is an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Health at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
