Rutgers Expert Available to Discuss 2020 Census

Rutgers scholar James Hughes is available to discuss the 2020 Census and its impact in New Jersey. The deadline for the 2020 Census is April 1 and questionnaires are being collected online, via phone and through the mail.

“Answering the census is vitally important to New Jersey and its future,’” said Hughes, a University Professor at Rutgers University–New Brunswick and an expert in demographics. “The total population of New Jersey as measured by the census determines the number of seats that we have in the U.S. House of Representatives. In turn, the number of seats determines our political influence in Washington. New Jersey currently has 12 seats as determined by the 2010 census. This was a drop from 13 seats in 2000, the result of our slow population growth. In order to maintain our current 12 congressional seats, we cannot afford an under-count of our population.

“Census data are used to allocate almost $700 billion annually in federal funding to states and localities,” Hughes continued. “A failure to have an accurate count of our population has significant financial consequences. Planning and funding for education, infrastructure and health are just some of the areas that will be impacted. It must be stressed that the census is a count of residents regardless of citizen status. Individual census responses are guaranteed confidentiality for 72 years. In 2022, the 1950 census responses will be available for public examination.”

Hughes is a nationally recognized expert on the economy, demographics, housing markets and real estate development. He can be reached at [email protected].
