Researchers Identify Mechanisms That Regulate Dynamics of Non-static Junctional Sarcoplasmic Reticulum in Heart Cells

Article title: Junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum motility in adult mouse ventricular myocytes

Authors: Benjamin M. Drum, Can Yuan, Ana De La Mata, Nathan Grainger, L. Fernando Santana

From the authors: “Our findings suggest a novel mechanism of [excitation-contraction (EC)] coupling regulation. These studies that [junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum (jSR)] mobility may provide another layer of regulation for EC coupling. Future are necessary to define the precise extent of jSR mobility, investigate regulatory mechanisms and understand if jSR mobility is disrupted during pathology.”

This study is highlighted as one of March’s “best of the best” as part of the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program.
