Mike Sayers, Michigan Tech Research Institute research scientist, is available to speak to using remote sensing to discover how climate change affects the world’s largest freshwater lakes, which account for 50% of the Earth’s surface freshwater.
Sayers’ NASA-funded research shows how coupled field and satellite observations provide a new understanding of how large bodies of water fix carbon, as well as how a changing climate and lakes interact.
Changes in how these giant lakes fix carbon (lake productivity) affect the entire lake foodweb, and have been linked to increases in water temperatures, as well as solar radiation and a reduction in wind speed.
Sayers can also speak to how freshwater lakes affect the global carbon cycle.
