UrduMary Rice, MD, MPH, is a pulmonary and critical care physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. As a physician, she cares for adults with respiratory disease, including asthma and chronic obstructive disease, and for critically ill adults in the intensive care unit. Her research is focused on understanding the short- and long-term respiratory health effects of exposure to air pollution among children and adults. Dr. Rice serves as chair of the Environmental Health Policy Committee of the American Thoracic Society.
Dr. Rice is lead author of an upcoming report on wildfire exposure, which will be published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society.
“President Bident’s decision comes at a time when we are bracing for a particularly challenging wildfire season,” said Dr. RIce.
The length and severity of the wildfire season is increasing due to climate change. Wildfires emit plumes of smoke that travel great distances, with serious health consequences, particularly for children and adults with lung disease.”
