PhRMA Foundation Partners with National Health Council to Host First of Its Kind Conference on New Approaches to Value Assessment

The PhRMA Foundation and the National Health Council will host The Next Generation of Value Assessment: Including the Patient Voice on November 12, 2019 in Washington, DC. This day-long conference will bring together leading health economics researchers and patient advocates in the movement to expand beyond traditional methods of measuring value in health care.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to showcase cutting-edge research underway to develop new approaches to value assessment that better incorporate the patient voice,” said Eileen Cannon, president of the PhRMA Foundation. “The emerging research we’ll highlight at the conference fills in the many missing pieces in current assessment methodologies. The PhRMA Foundation is excited to be a part of this innovative exploration of value, and to convene stakeholders to discuss how better defining value can impact the entire health care system.”

Conference presentations will show the connection between value assessment research and the practical applications that support and strengthen the decision-making process in the U.S. health care system. PhRMA Foundation grant recipients who are discovering and developing methods to include patient perspectives in value assessment will also showcase their findings, including a researcher from each of the PhRMA Foundation’s four Centers of Excellence.

Other speakers include a wide variety of stakeholders across the health care system:

Josephine Briggs, MD, Interim Executive Director, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)

Jennifer Bright, MPA, Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI)

Karl Cooper, Esq., American Association on Health and Disability

Leah Howard, JD, National Psoriasis Foundation

Nicole Mittmann, MSc, PhD, Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH)

• Tom Parry, PhD, Integrated Benefits Institute

Steve Pearson, MD, MSc, Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER)

Richard Willke, PhD, International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR)

The conference will conclude with brief presentations from the winners of the Foundation’s 2019 Challenge Awards, which honored researchers who focus on novel proposals to improve value assessment methods that move beyond using the quality adjusted life year (QALY) evaluate health care treatments. Their winning submissions will also be published in an upcoming special feature in the American Journal of Managed Care.
