Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Among Nation’s Best in Nine Specialties

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is recognized as a national leader in nine specialties, according to the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings released today. In total, 11 Ohio State specialties ranked in the top 10% of all hospitals in the country. It’s Ohio State’s 28^th consecutive year with nationally ranked specialties.

Additionally, the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center ranks as Columbus’ “Best Hospital” and second in Ohio behind Cleveland Clinic.

“I’m incredibly proud that Ohio State is consistently a national and statewide leader in health care excellence,” said Dr. Hal Paz, executive vice president and chancellor for health affairs at The Ohio State University and CEO of the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. “We are focused on providing the highest-quality care and experience for our patients, whether they are from central Ohio or far beyond.”

In the 2020-2021 rankings, Ohio State is a national leader in nine areas, including ear, nose and throat (otolaryngology); rehabilitation; diabetes and endocrinology; pulmonology and lung surgery; cancer; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; cardiology and heart surgery; and urology.

Two other specialties scored as high-performing: geriatrics and gastroenterology and gastroenterology surgery. These areas scored nearly as well as the nationally ranked programs.

When it comes to common adult procedures and conditions rated by U.S. News, the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is recognized as high performing in seven: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure and lung cancer surgery.

The “Best Hospitals” rankings are based on several national criteria, including clinical outcomes, reputation among physicians and patient experience. The rankings are considered a trusted resource for consumers and a benchmarking tool for the health care industry.

The “America’s Best Hospitals” issue is compiled using annual data on more than 4,500 U.S. hospitals.
