Multihazards Scenario Generator: A Network‐Based Simulation of Natural Disasters

As the impact of natural disasters increases over the years, there are still few studies that quantify the dynamic interactions that characterize multihazard events. Without considering the dynamic complexity of natural catastrophes, impact assessments underestimate risk and misinform emergency management priorities. 

Emergency planning and resilience assessment becomes more effective with the ability to generate multihazard scenarios with impacts at a desired level. New Research published in Risk Analysis establishes a framework for using graph theory and networks to generate and model the complex impacts of multi-hazard scenarios. The 2016 Kaikōura earthquake is used as a calibrating event, and cascading hazards, including numerous landslides, show that the pilot model generates a credible set of complex multihazard impacts.
