Morristown Medical Center Among 1st to Receive American College of Cardiology Transcatheter Valve Certification

Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center has received American College of Cardiology (ACC)Transcatheter Valve Certification, a  designation of excellence that recognizes demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients undergoing transcatheter valve repair and replacement procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). ACC awards this certification following a rigorous, months-long evaluation of the team’s ability to meet standards for multidisciplinary teams, formalized training, shared decision-making and registry performance.

Only about 6% of the more than 750 American hospitals that perform TAVR, a minimally invasive heart valve replacement procedure, have earned this designation.

“The ACC Transcatheter Valve Certification provides external confirmation of what our team of professionals and patients already know: we have one of the best TAVR programs and teams in the nation, with outstanding outcomes and a dedication to continuously improving the quality of our program,” said John M. Brown III, MD, The Grant V. Parr Chair, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery and Vice-Chair Cardiovascular Medicine, Morristown Medical Center.  “This elite certification also validates our commitment to provide the highest quality multidisciplinary, evidence-based care in advancing the field of structural heart disease research.”

“The American College of Cardiology is one of the world’s most widely respected standard-setting organizations for cardiologists and heart hospitals, and has extremely strict standards for certification,” said Philippe Géneréux, MD, Co-Director of the Structural Heart Program at Morristown Medical Center. “This recognition demonstrates how the Morristown Medical Center Valve and Structural Heart Center incorporates best practices, as determined by recent guidelines and expert consensus statements, into the care of our transcatheter valve patients.

As the region’s leader in cardiac care, we are committed to translating these practices into the highest quality treatments for our patients, with the best outcomes.”

Morristown Medical Center is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the top hospital in New Jersey, and has one of the top ranked programs for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in the nation.  U.S. News also ranks the medical center as “#1 in New Jersey” for Adult Aortic Valve Surgery, as well as “High Performing” nationally.  The medical center’s Valve and Structural Heart Center treats more heart valve patients than any other hospital in New Jersey and is in the top 3% of all cardiac structural heart and valve centers in the United States.

The ACC’s Transcatheter Valve Certification is an external review and certification process that pairs with established national clinical databases to monitor patient safety and real-world outcomes related to transcatheter valve therapies. Participation in established national clinical databases such as the STS/ACC TVT Registry is required for hospitals interested in achieving Transcatheter Valve Certification. This registry gathers data on procedures and outcomes and allows cardiovascular professionals to understand how transcatheter heart valve procedures are being used throughout the U.S., and what impact they have on patient health.

“Morristown Medical Center has demonstrated its commitment to providing New Jersey residents with excellent heart care,” said Phillip D. Levy, MD, FACC, Chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board.  “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award Transcatheter Valve Certification to Morristown Medical Center.”

The certification uses established national clinical measures to support clinical decisions and links process improvement to patient outcomes. Hospitals that achieve Transcatheter Valve Certification learn best practices for implementing evidence-based medicine and are able to track key performance metrics to better identify opportunities for improvement.
