Memorial Sloan Kettering Named One of the Best Hospitals for Cancer Care by U.S. News & World Report for the 31st Year in a Row

July 28, 2020, NEW YORK CITY — Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) has been recognized as the number two hospital for cancer care in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its annual Best Hospitals listing.

Since U.S. News & World Report established the prestigious rankings more than 30 years ago, MSK has earned either the first or second spot for best cancer care in the country each year. In addition to its overall ranking for excellence in cancer care, this year MSK earned an influential ranking in several specialty areas:

These rankings recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. According to U.S. News & World Report, hospitals that rank nationally in any specialty have the skill and experience to treat the most complex and demanding cases that can arise in that area.

MSK Recognized as Leaders in Subspecialty Disease Categories

This year, MSK was ranked the second in the nation for the treatment of ear, nose, and throat and urologic diseases, and ranked third in the nation in gynecology. This recognition of excellence reflects the depth and breadth of expertise that MSK brings when treating people with these diseases. MSK was also recognized in five additional subspecialty categories, three of those for the first time: diabetes and endocrinology, pulmonary and lung surgery, and nephrology. MSK was categorized as “high performing” in the fields of neurology and neurosurgery, colon cancer surgery, and lung cancer surgery. Through close collaboration between physicians and scientists, and through avid research and education, MSK’s goal is to provide world class care to our patients as we work to discover more effective strategies to prevent, control, and ultimately cure cancer.

“Being recognized as one of the best hospitals for cancer care is a testament to the unwavering commitment and hard work of our dedicated physicians, researchers, nurses, and exceptional staff  at Memorial Sloan Kettering,” said Craig B. Thompson, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of MSK.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the entire MSK community for their incredible efforts — especially over the past several months, as we continue to navigate and co-exist with COVID-19,” Dr. Thompson added. “While people have been encouraged to stay home, cancer hasn’t sheltered in place. MSK is here for our patients and their family members.”

“We are thrilled to be recognized for our commitment to patient care, clinical research, and education,” said Lisa DeAngelis, MD, Physician-in-Chief and Chief Medical Officer. “We are a community united in our mission to support patients, establish new and effective treatments, and build on our legacy of pioneering research and compassionate care. Our patients are at the center of everything we do and are the inspiration for our mission.”

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are determined using a complex set of factors. These include the hospital’s reputation among board-certified physician specialists around the nation, patient survival and safety data, and adequacy of nurse staffing levels, among other criteria.
