Media Availability: NIH hosts National Dementia Care Summit

WHAT: NIH will host the National Research Summit on Care, Services and Supports for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers. The event will offer reporters a chance to hear from renowned experts on a wide range of topics, including Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form of dementia.

The goal of the summit is to identify evidence-based programs, strategies and approaches that can improve the lives of the millions of Americans living with dementia and their caregivers. NIH has invited a diverse range of participants — including researchers, care providers, and advocacy organization representatives, as well as those living with dementia and their family caregivers — to share and discuss their innovative ideas.

At the summit, you will hear the latest research findings on topics that span the dementia experience, for example:

  • Opportunities and challenges for people living with dementia and their caregivers to be active research partners, from influencing the design of studies and recruitment strategies to receiving study data
  • The toll that dementia in all its various forms takes on Americans and their caregivers as the symptoms worsen
  • Disparities in health, services and interventions for people living with dementia, and their caregivers
  • Challenges of financing and delivering long-term care services and supports in the home and community
  • The challenges and opportunities of providing integrated long-term services and supports and medical care across a range of health care settings that serve people living with dementia
  • How to improve the adoption of evidence-based methods of dementia care and caregiving
  • Ways to facilitate cross-cutting, high-impact research on dementia care and services through survey methods, electronic health records access and other research resources and methods

In addition to presentations, the summit will feature a special opportunity to speak with leading researchers in attendance. Reach out, and NIA will make those connections for you before, during and/or after the summit.

The summit is led by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is supported by the private sector through donations to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH).
