Maternal Obesity May Cause Impaired Fetal Muscle Development and Metabolic Disorder

Article title: An obesogenic maternal environment impairs mouse growth patterns, satellite cell activation and markers of post-natal myogenesis

Authors: Jasmine Mikovic, Camille R. Brightwell, Angus Lindsay, Yuan Wen, Greg Kowalski, Aaron P. Russell, Christopher S. Fry,  Séverine Lamon

From the authors: “Our findings are the first to demonstrate that maternal over-nutrition impairs markers of post-natal myogenesis in the offspring, and are particularly relevant to today’s society where the incidence of overweight/obesity in women of child-bearing age is increasing.”

This study is highlighted as one of November’s “best of the best” as part of the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program.
