Mark A. Warner, M.D. receives the Distinguished Service Award

ORLANDO, Fla. – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today presented Mark A. Warner, M.D., with its 2018 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his contributions spanning all areas of the specialty including patient care, academic leadership, scientific discovery and a remarkable involvement in specialty organizations, including ASA. The award is the highest honor ASA bestows and is presented annually to a member who has transformed the specialty of anesthesiology.

Dr. Warner is the Annenberg Professor of Anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and president of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF).

A true leader in anesthesiology, Dr. Warner is a past president of the ASA, American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), Academy of Anesthesiology and Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists.

During his 40 years of ASA membership, he has made innumerable contributions including serving as an editor of Anesthesiology, leading multiple practice parameter work groups, and working with fellow Executive Committee members and ABA leaders to develop the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of care, a patient-centric, team-based system of coordinated care that guides patients through the entire surgical experience, from the decision to undergo surgery to discharge and beyond. His decade-long initiative in support of the PSH has resulted in increased training for residents in perioperative medicine, the development of the multi-institutional PSH Learning Collaborative and, in many institutions, the expansion of clinical practices and evolution of anesthesiology into perioperative care. In addition, Dr. Warner has served on the boards and executive committees of three ASA-related organizations: the APSF, Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) and Anesthesia Quality Institute.

Throughout his long career at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Warner has held many leadership roles, including serving on their Board of Governors and as Administrative Committee chair. In addition, he’s led Mayo Clinic’s pediatric practices, large hospital system, Center for Military Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, and the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Within the College of Medicine, he has served as executive dean and dean of the School of Graduate Medical Education.

Dr. Warner has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles focused on outcomes research, covering such topics as perioperative pulmonary aspiration, blindness and neuropathy, as well as multiple books and book chapters. He’s been a visiting professor at more than 80 academic medical centers with anesthesiology residency training programs, and led multiple practice parameter work groups on fasting, guidelines for patient positioning, and more.

“We greatly appreciate Dr. Warner’s continuous and exceptional record of service to ASA and the field of anesthesia,” said ASA President Linda J. Mason, M.D., FASA. “His sustained and passionate leadership at a local, state and national level has guided the specialty to its current standing as the leader in perioperative patient care.”

Dr. Warner received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo and completed his residency training in anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic.
