Lithium-ion battery recycling expert available: Jeff Spangenberger, Argonne National Laboratory
Jeff Spangenberger is the Materials Recycling Group Leader in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He and his team have demonstrated the recovery of plastics, metals, and materials from numerous waste streams such as auto shredder residue and electronic waste, at scales ranging from bench to commercial. In recent years, his research has expanded into lithium-ion battery recycling.
Spangenberger also leads the U.S. Department of Energy’s ReCell Center, a national collaboration — led by Argonne — of industry, academia and national laboratories working together to advance recycling technologies along the entire battery life-cycle for current and future battery chemistries. Under his leadership, the collaborative ReCell Center has made strides in four areas:
- Directly recycling cathodes, which store lithium ions and release them when a battery charges
- Recovering other battery materials
- Designing with recycling in mind
- Modeling and analysis
Spangenberger has received four patents related to his recycling research.
