To paraphrase a favorite quote of Traditi’s by author Neil Gaiman, “The Internet gives you 100,000 answers; a librarian can bring you back the right one.” Lisa Traditi has spent her 35-year career in library science dedicated to this idea—a laser-focused approach to providing exceptional customer service in both hospital and academic settings, translating essential information into knowledge that healthcare professionals need. Lisa, Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the University of Colorado Strauss Health Science Library, teaches evidence-based practice and creating influence at the local, regional and national level. She is the local co-coordinator for Supporting Clinical Care: An Institute in Evidence-Based Practice for Medical Librarians, a program designed to ultimately support health care professionals by providing medical librarians with the tools needed to use clinical questions and evidence-based literature for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, to judge the internal validity of randomized controlled trials, and to interpret systematic reviews and qualitative and diagnostic studies.
“Our MLA professional memberships’ expertise in data management, clinical, and research science is vital to our public health and clinical partners tracking the spread of COVID-19 and working tirelessly to flatten the curve,” noted Traditi. “Our ability to identify, track, decipher and communicate information efficiently and effectively is essential during this ever-changing healthcare landscape.”
With MLA’s current membership base of 3,000 professionals and 400 institutions in the health information field, countless MLA members are partnering with healthcare professionals to track COVID-19. While those efforts remain at the forefront of our members’ minds, the organization remains focused on its recent reorganization efforts that center on community and collaboration and building on MLA’s new thoughtful communities’ framework to further connect its members in meaningful dialogue.
“Our new communities framework ensures our MLA members are part of vital conversations within our member-driven organization and resources for one another. Members can embrace leadership roles that drive future conversations about health administration publishing, finances, diversity, or open source publishing,” noted Traditi. While the world looks very different than it did several months ago, the library science profession remains as essential as ever to the healthcare profession, and to those seeking expertise from an information professional including physicians, nurses, public librarians, and the public.
“Health science librarians choose to be helpers. We choose to provide information. We are always giving back,” said Traditi. “We plan to focus on communicating key values to our stakeholders and providers. Through potential partnerships with professional journals and other organizations, we can further expand our reach by talking about, or writing about, our profession’s steadfast ability to help everyone around us—always connecting people with the right information when they need it the most,” noted MLA President Lisa Traditi.
