IU sociologist available to comment on how school closures, e-learning disproportionately impact low-income students

With more than 10,600 of the nation’s public and private schools temporarily closing in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), low-income students are disproportionally impacted. Many families rely on schools to provide child care and meals while the adults are at work, and the closures have them scrambling for alternatives. The transition to e-learning for many K-12 and college students highlights another imbalance: access to technology outside of the classroom.

Jessica Calarco is available to comment on the inequalities that can result from school closings and online learning in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Calarco is an associate professor of sociology at Indiana University. Her research examines how social inequalities impact families, children and schools.
