ISPOR Holds Its First Completely Virtual Conference

Lawrenceville, NJ, USA—May 21, 2020—ISPOR—The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) concluded its Virtual ISPOR 2020 conference yesterday. ISPOR 2020 was the Society’s first completely virtual conference that was redesigned as an online event when the COVID-19 pandemic required a necessary cancellation of the in-person conference.

Virtual ISPOR 2020 was held live online May 18-20 and provided registrants with HEOR programming content that had been planned for what was to have been an in-person conference held in Orlando, FL, USA during the same time. More than 1300 registrants representing 54 countries across the globe convened virtually. The virtual conference included nearly 60 hours of content—plenary sessions, issue panels, workshops, podium presentations, networking sessions, and educational symposia—that are being made available to registrants as on-demand recordings through June 30.


Plenary 1—Focus on Health Policy
The virtual conference opened on May 18 with its first plenary session, “Health Policy—Designing For the Future,” that featured a multistakeholder panel of experts who shared health policy insights from the United States and Western Europe. Panelists included Dana Goldman, PhD with University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, USA who moderated the session; Margaret Anderson, MA with Deloitte Consulting LLP in Washington, DC, USA; Sir Andrew Dillon with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in London, England, UK; and Tomas Philipson, PhD, MA with the White House Council of Economic Advisers in Washington, DC, USA.

Plenary 2—Focus on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence
The second plenary session, “HEOR and Clinical Decision Making—Advancing Meaningful Progress,” was held on May 19and explored the rise of big data and artificial intelligence and how they can strengthen health service delivery and enhance the patient experience. Panelists included Jan Hansen, PhD with Genentech in South San Francisco, CA, USA who moderated the session; Marc Boutin, JD with the National Health Council in Washington, DC, USA; Rachael Callcut, MD, MSPH with the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, Center for Digital Health Innovation in San Francisco, CA, USA; and Nigam Shah, MBBS, PhD with Stanford University in Stanford, CA, USA.

Plenary 3—Focus on Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
The third plenary session, “On the Road to Enhanced Cost-Effectiveness Analysis—New Directions, New Milestones,” was held on May 20 and explored a number of innovative approaches that can help capture patient and societal values in value assessment frameworks that go beyond the standard cost per quality-adjusted life year usage. Panelists included Deborah Freund, MA, MPH, PhD with Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA, USA who moderated the session; Anirban Basu, PhD with the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, USA; Susan Griffin, PhD with the University of York in York, England, UK; and Darius Lakdawalla, PhD with the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Preconference Plenary—Focus on the COVID-19 Pandemic
ISPOR also held a special preconference plenary session, “HEOR in the Era of COVID-19,” that was held on May 14 and was free to both members and nonmembers. This timely plenary featured a number of HEOR and health policy thought leaders discussing the rapidly evolving global COVID-19 crisis and the implications for short-term and long-term healthcare decisions. Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, Director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy in Washington, DC, USA delivered the keynote address, “COVID-19: Accelerating the Evidence to Inform Our Response.” A panel discussion followed to address “A Global Call to Action for Health Economics and Outcomes Researchers” with Jalpa A. Doshi, PhD with the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, USA who moderated the session; Andrew H. Briggs, MSc, DPhil with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, England, UK; Nuria Oliver, PhD with Data-Pop Alliance, Vodafone Institute, and ELLIS in Alicante, Spain; John H. Powers, MD with the George Washington University School of Medicine and University of Maryland School of Medicine in Rockville, MD, USA; and Leo Yee-Sin, MPH with the National Centre for Infectious Diseases in Singapore.

Research abstracts from the conference will continue to be published in the Society’s journal, Value in Health, and will be available in the ISPOR Presentations Database. The ISPOR Short Course Program is also be presented virtually with a variety of course topics and dates offered in June and July.
