Introduction to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (UN Decade) has an ambitious, transformative agenda developed to help reduce the decline in ocean health.

Alan will present the journey from a 2017 UN General Assembly proclamation of a UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development to the submission to the UN General Assembly in 2020 of an Implementation Plan as developed by the IOC-UNESCO.

The Decade Implementation Plan provides a non-prescriptive framework for transformational action that will build on existing achievements and deliver across geographies, sectors, disciplines, and generations.

Alan will outline:

· the key Challenges, Objectives and anticipated initiatives which will require the involvement of an interdisciplinary network of stakeholders, including Early Career Ocean Professionals

· finish with an overview of the UKs approach to bring visibility to UK contributions.
