Introducing Materials for Quantum Technology — a new open-access journal from IOPP

IOP Publishing has launched

Materials for Quantum Technology

, a new fully open access journal devoted to the development and application of materials science for all quantum-enabled technologies and devices.

Supported by a diverse Editorial Board of leading experts in the field,

Materials for Quantum Technology

is a highly selective, multidisciplinary journal that recognises the significant long-term contribution materials science will have in realising future real-world quantum technologies.

All content will be permanently free to read under a CC-BY licence, so it can be accessed and shared by anyone without restriction.

The journal’s scope represents the interdisciplinary nature of the field and will bring together the materials science, chemistry and engineering communities in both academia and industry.

Specific areas include:

  • Fabrication and characterisation of materials and interfaces for quantum applications;
  • Materials for hybrid quantum systems;
  • Materials for quantum sensing and metrology;
  • Materials for quantum optics and photonics;
  • Materials for qubit systems;
  • Novel materials and devices for quantum computing and quantum electronics;
  • Chemistry for quantum technology;
  • Theory and computational design of new materials for quantum applications;
  • Emergent properties of quantum materials and their applications.

Professor Jason Smith of Oxford University, UK, is the journal’s founding Editor-in-Chief. He said: “We stand on the brink of a second quantum revolution, and materials science will be key to unlocking novel technologies utilising and controlling quantum states. With the launch of

Materials for Quantum Technology

we aim to showcase work at the exciting interface of materials science, chemistry, condensed matter physics and quantum science that will help realise novel quantum technologies into the future.”

Dr Tim Smith, Associate Director for Journals Product Development at IOP Publishing, said: “The rapid growth of quantum science and technology, reflected by an increasing number of major funding programmes worldwide, has been exciting to see and we’re proud of IOP’s history in serving the field over many years.

Materials for Quantum Technology

will build upon this long-standing reputation and represents another major addition to our expanding open access portfolio in the physical sciences. Guided by our expert Editorial Board, we look forward to developing the journal into a unique home that captures the contribution of materials science in advancing new quantum technologies.”

Materials for Quantum Technology

is now open for submissions. There will be no article publication charges for any articles submitted to the journal before 2022. For more information, including the full scope and editorial guidelines, please visit the
