Ingegerd Johansson wins William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Ingegerd Johansson, Umeå University Medical School, Sweden, as the 2021 recipient of the William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award. Johansson was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Johansson is a Senior Professor in the department of odontology at the Umeå University Medical School in Umeå, Sweden. She received her D.D.S. and M.S. in nutritional physiology in Gothenburg, Sweden. She was a visiting doctoral fellow in William Bowen’s lab at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Bethesda, Md., USA, in 1979.

Johansson is known for her innovative studies linking nutrition with dental caries, and for her pioneering work on the microbiota of infants and infant nutrition. She has presented numerous papers on nutrition and dental caries at IADR and other scientific meetings and has authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific publications. Johansson has been well funded by the Swedish Research Councils for projects in the dental field and has mentored many students in research including 11 Ph.D. and 25 M.Sc. students.

Johansson has received several prestigious awards including the Thureus Prize in Cariology and the Miller Prize awarded by the Swedish Dental Association. She served as a scientific advisor to the National Food Administration of Sweden, chair and expert for several committees of the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions and has been a board member of the Swedish Dental Association and the Patent Revenue Research Foundation.

In 2017 the IADR Research in Dental Caries Award was renamed the William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award, who had recently passed. Bowen was professor emeritus, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Center for Oral Biology, University of Rochester Medical Center School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York, USA. He was a long-standing member of IADR and served as the 67th President of the Association, the 10th President of the American Association for Dental Research and as IADR treasurer.
