Hurricane modeling expert available: Leah E. Talaber, Argonne National Laboratory

During hurricane season, we must accurately predict how and when electric power might be lost due to storms. Argonne National Laboratory’s Leah Talaber is an expert on how hurricanes behave and how storms threaten the electrical grid.

Throughout hurricanes like Isaias, Talaber tracks their progress, keeping U.S. governmental agencies informed on possible blackouts. She also helps predict how storms endanger other lifeline infrastructures — natural gas, clean water, healthcare, communications, and so on — that depend on the electrical grid.

By understanding how hurricanes can damage areas, state and local government leaders can make better decisions about how best to help communities recover. In a 2018 training exercise, Talaber and her colleagues predicted the path of a hurricane as it struck the East Coast. Months later, Hurricane Florence followed a nearly identical path.
