How Communities Can Use Monday to Get Their Members Moving

Who/What:

University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension and Move It Monday initiative’s launch of “Walk Across Wakulla” program is the focus of the webinar, brought to you by eXtension, The Monday Campaigns, and UF IFAS Extension.

Rachel Pienta, PhD, UF/IFAS Extension 4-H agent, will share her learnings, tips and insights on how communities can launch their own program and keep members energized and motivated. She recently used the Move It Monday concept, along with social media channels, to develop her own successful pilot program — Walk Across Wakulla — which challenged local residents to commit to walking the width of Wakulla over an 8-week period. Wakulla County is located south of Tallahassee, Florida.

Meghan Crowley, Move It Monday senior associate, will present research demonstrating how a weekly Monday cue can help motivate people to adopt healthy behaviors, such as a daily walking routine.

Why:

Staying active helps communities ward off a number of health issues, from heart disease and diabetes to obesity and bone fractures, but encouraging people to get the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity isn’t always easy. The webinar will offer simple strategies to help get people active and keep them moving.
