Hackensack University Medical Center Unveils “Compassion Cubby”

Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center announced today the opening of the “Compassion Cubby”, which offers patients being discharged clean, donated clothing, if they need it.

“Hackensack University Medical Center is committed to providing an outstanding, compassionate patient experience,” said Mark D. Sparta, FACHE, president and chief hospital executive, Hackensack University Medical Center and executive vice president of Population Health, Hackensack Meridian Health. “I would like to thank all of our team members who were involved in making Compassion Cubby a reality – a heartfelt initiative that speaks to our core values as an organization.”

The idea for Compassion Cubby began in 2011 when Jane Pascale, point of care technician, Hackensack University Medical Center, noticed a patient who was being discharged in the wintertime wearing only a patient gown and socks. The brief encounter led her to question why the patient did not leave dressed in appropriate clothing. Jane learned that many patients across the country leave hospitals without adequate clothes because they are either homeless or their clothing was damaged as a result of their injury. In addition, most hospitals either do not have a system in place to provide clean clothes in different sizes for patients to wear home, or patients do not have a loved one to bring spare clothing.

“Most hospitals are unable to offer patients in need of clothing anything other than patient gowns before they leave the hospital. As a healthcare provider, I knew there was a more compassionate solution, which is why I collaborated with my colleagues to create the Compassion Cubby,” said Jane.

Over the last few months, campus Culture Champions and Green Champions collected clothing donations from team members and their families. The items are sorted and managed by the sustainability team and volunteers at The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center®.

Long-time medical center vendor partners Greg and Jerry Iannone from Unitex Linen Services, graciously agreed to launder all donated clothing in the same process as the medical center’s patient gowns and linens and return them to the Environmental Health Center, ready to be stocked in the Cubby.

The Compassion Cubby holds adult clothing, including shirts, pants, and coats of all sizes and for all seasons and is available to any patient in need. Team members will manage the distribution of the items and ensure that the cubby shelves are always full. Team members will continue to collect clothing on a regular basis ensuring this initiative grows in the months and years ahead.

This is another important, meaningful opportunity for Hackensack University Medical Center to extend their exceptional, compassionate care beyond their campus into the community.
