Fredrick Allan Clive Wright wins IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Fredrick Allan Clive Wright, The University of Sydney, Australia, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research. Wright was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Wright is a Clinical Professor and the Associate Director of the Centre for Education and Research on Ageing within the Concord Clinical School of The University of Sydney, Australia. He received a B.D.S. in 1968, a M.D.S. in 1972 and a Ph.D. in 1983 from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Wright taught in dental schools at the University of Otago, New Zealand and the University of Manitoba, Canada, as well as the University of Melbourne, Australia, where he was professor of preventive and community dentistry and served as head of the dental school from 1990-97.

Wright’s main areas of research include preventive dentistry, dental public health and oral health of older people. He has published more than 130 scientific journal articles, with around 20 on epidemiological studies on oral health of older persons published within the past 10 years. Wright has taken up leadership roles in promoting health services, behavioral sciences, geriatric dentistry and epidemiological research projects in Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and Japan. His research has greatly contributed to the knowledge of the oral health of the older people in these places, the relationship between oral health and general health of older adults and the provision effective geriatric oral care services.

The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research consists of a monetary award and plaque and is generously supported by GlaxoSmithKline. The award is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize outstanding research accomplishments in the field of geriatric oral research. This is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
