Fionnuala Lundy wins IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pulp Biology and Regeneration

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Fionnuala Lundy, Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pulp Biology and Regeneration. Lundy was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Lundy is an Associate Professor in Oral Science at Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. Lundy started her undergraduate studies in Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland where she completed B.S. degree in biochemistry and then completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology. After being a research officer in biotechnology at Ulster University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, for two years she moved back to Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland where she has since been leading a research group investigating pathways from infection/inflammation and pain to healing and repair. Her major research interest is on naturally-occurring antimicrobial peptides and novel peptide mimetic that may be useful for therapeutic intervention. A substantial proportion of her work on healing and repair is focused on oral/dental stem cells, pulp regeneration and various oral diseases.

Lundy has given various presentations at IADR and other scientific meetings. She has published more than 76 articles in medical and dental journals including Journal of Dental Research, Pain and the Journal of Endodontics. Over 30 of her peer-reviewed publications are on pulp biology and pulp regeneration or related to oral diseases. Lundy is currently the President of IADR Pan European Region and served as president of IADR Pulp Biology & Regeneration Group (2019-20).

The IADR Pulp Biology and Regeneration Award is supported by Dentsply Sirona and consists of a monetary award and plaque. The award recognizes, encourages and stimulates outstanding research contributions in the field of pulp biology. As one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, this award is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
