FAPESP will discuss an integrative approach to clinical long-term effects of COVID-19

The long and post-acute effects of COVID-19 will be the theme of the next FAPESP COVID-19 webinar that will be held on June 2nd. COVID-19 is a novel disease which is revealing unprecedented challenges.

While many patients with symptoms fortunately can survive acute disease, a substantial cohort undergoes a sustained clinical picture, exhibiting a subacute stage or “long” COVID-19. These patients persist with (ocasionally severe) fatigue, joint and muscle pains, neuro-psichyatric symptoms, and several other clinical ailments.

While the etiology of subacute COVID-19 remains unclear, disturbed immune responses, viral persistence, and neural cell damage may be possible mechanisms.

FAPESP has proposed this webinar to discuss an integrative approach to this evolving new clinical condition. This symposium will be of interest to basic investigators, clinical scientists and epidemiologists. Academic community and journalists are invited to register at

Luiz Eugênio Mello, FAPESP’s Scientific Director, will welcome the speakers. The moderator will be Francisco Laurindo from The Heart Institute, University of São Paulo School of Medicine (INCOR-FMUSP).

Four speakers have been invited to contribute to the webinar’s purpose with their studies.

Regis Goulart Rosa, researcher and intensive care physician at the Hospital Moinhos de Vento, Porto Alegre (Brazil), will address the long-term outcomes after hospitalization for COVID-19 in Brazil.

Catherine Hough, Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University, will lecture about the study “One month of outcomes after hospitalization for COVID-19, and next steps: the United States experience”.

Geraldo Busatto, Full Professor at FMUSP’s Department of Psychiatry, will focus on the neuropsychiatric implications of long COVID-19.

Lastly, the topic “Immunological Predictors of COVID-19 Severity” will be expanded by Carolina Lucas, Postdoctoral Associate from the School of Medicine, Yale University.
