FAPESP webinar will discuss how SARS-COV-2 affects the human brain

The next FAPESP COVID-19 Webinar, set for July 7th, will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the human brain, which is much wider than previously thought – COVID-19 syndrome includes neurological symptoms in over 30% of patients.

Entitled “What does COVID-19 have to do with the brain?”, the webinar aims to show how understanding SARS-CoV-2’s impacts the human brain is key to improve diagnostics, enhance the development of therapeutic agents and, therefore, help patients. The presentations are expected to address the molecular mechanisms of COVID-19 from both cellular and organismal viewpoints,

Luiz Eugênio Mello, FAPESP’s Scientific Director, will welcome the speakers. The moderator will be Daniel Martins-de Souza, an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and one of FAPESP’s Area Panel Coordinators (Biology).

Four speakers have been invited to contribute with their studies to the webinar’s purpose.

The main paths which can be used by the virus to enter the brain will be explored by Helena Radbruch, a professor at the Institute of Neuropathology, Charité Universitaetsmedizin Berlin

Marcelo Mori, a professor in UNICAMP’s Institute of Biology (IB), will focus on research on virus detection in human brain and its effects.

The professor at the University of São Paulo’s Biomedical Sciences Institute, Jean Pierre Peron, and Marília Zaluar Guimarães, from the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), will tackle the molecular effects of the virus in preclinical models (in vitro and in vivo).
