Expert available to talk about proning benefits for COVID-19 patients

Proning, a supportive intervention used for decades to treat ICU patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), is a recommended practice for COVID-19 patients. In proning, or prone positioning, patients are laid on their stomachs, allowing gravity to refill air sacks that may have collapsed as a result.

Rebecca Ellis, an associate professor and assistant dean for graduate programs and DNP coordinator at the Indiana University School of Nursing, is available to talk about the benefits of proning. She leads a collaborative project with IU Health that applies best-practice evidence in treating ARDS using proning.

“It is now recommended to use proning for anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, because people can have improved outcomes from proning,” said Ellis. “In our non-ventilated patients, proning can be used to prophylactically reduce the risk that these people don’t end up on ventilators.”
