Expert Available: @stonybrooku Ocean Conservationist Responds to President Biden’s Call to Tackle Climate Crisis

President Joseph Biden recently announced Actions to Tackle the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, Create Jobs, and Restore Scientific Integrity Across the Federal Government which can be found on this Fact Sheet: “This order commits to the goal of conserving at least 30 percent of our lands and oceans by 2030 and launches a process for stakeholder engagement from agricultural and forest landowners, fishermen, Tribes, States, Territories, local officials, and others to identify strategies that will result in broad participation”

Stony Brook University Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation Science Dr. Ellen K. Pikitch is available to speak about ocean conservation, ecosystem-based approaches and marine protected areas in regards to the President’s recent call to action. “This announcement represents a sea change in US Ocean policy. The goal of protecting 30% of U.S. land and sea is strongly supported by science, and reaching this target by 2030 is feasible given strong political will. Opportunities for further ocean conservation are widespread and include areas within the national jurisdictions of most coastal states as well as the high seas,” said Pikitch.
