Engineers develop skin rejuvenation method using stem cells

BINGHAMTON, NY — Vesicles derived from human stem cells can be used to rejuvenate skin, according to a research team including faculty at Binghamton University, State University of New York.

The use of stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) as a cell-free therapeutic modality for skin treatment has emerged as a promising application in dermatology.

The research team used ultrasonication (sound energy at high frequencies) to shear human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells to generate engineered extracellular vesicles (eEV). Their results indicate that eEVs can potentially be used for skin regeneration and rejuvenation and they can be efficiently and rapidly prepared with ultrasonication.

Binghamton researchers involved in this study include Komal K. Abhange, Yi Wen, Yundi Chen, Fei Xue, Guosheng Wang and Yuan Wan.

The paper, “Preparation of Engineered Extracellular Vesicles Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Ultrasonication for Skin Rejuvenation,” was published in ACS Omega.
