Edward Chin Man Lo wins IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Edward Chin Man Lo, The University of Hong Kong, SAR, China, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award. Lo was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Lo is Chair Professor of Dental Public Health in the Faculty of Dentistry and the Tam Wah-Ching Professor in Dental Science at The University of Hong Kong, SAR, China, where he also received his B.D.S., M.D.S and Ph.D. His research interests include oral epidemiology, both psycho-sociological and clinical studies, dental care services, including dental care delivery, dental services utilization and patient satisfaction, and preventive and minimally invasive dentistry, including clinical trials on prevention and innovative treatments for dental caries and periodontal diseases.

With over 300 peer-reviewed publications and 68 research and project grants to his name, Lo is a distinguished dental researcher, educator and public health worker. He has contributed significantly to the development of various innovative and effective approaches in the prevention and treatment of dental caries in children, the training of many dental public health experts who are current leaders in the field and the implementation of outreach dental care service programs for children.

Lo has served the IADR in various roles including president of the IADR Southeast Asian Division (2003-05), president of the IADR Asian Pacific Region (2008-09), IADR treasurer (2012-15) and as a JDR Editorial Board member from 2008-11 and 2015-20. Among many other awards, he received the 2016 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research, the 2016 IADR Cariology Research Group Science Award, 2013 IADR Southeast Asian Division Distinguished Service Award, 2012 IADR Colgate Community-Based Research Award for Caries Prevention and the 1998 IADR John Clarkson Fellowship.

Sponsored by The Borrow Foundation, the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention where fluoride in different formats is utilized. This is the 30th year of the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award, which consists of a plaque and a monetary award of $3,500 USD.
